NY FOUNTAIN ART FAIR 2013



El domingo pasado se celebraba en Nueva York la nueva edición de la FOUNTAIN ART FAIR. Coincidía con el 100 aniversario del Armory Show, evento en el que se engloba esta y otras ferias.

La Fountain se fundó en 2006 en Williamsburg, Brooklyn, como una alternativa a las asépticas y aburridas ferias de arte contemporáneo. Todo tiene un aire muy “hazlo tu mismo”, con muchísimos stands ocupados por los propios artistas, sin intermediarios. En mi opinión, la mejor edición fue la de 2011, que se hizo en un barco anclado en los muelles de Chelsea. Pero hay que reconocer que este espacio en Lexington Avenue es mucho más grande, más solemne y además, no se mueve con las olas.

Nada más llegar al antiguo arsenal y antes incluso de entrar, ya tuve la suerte de toparme con un panel bastante grande realizado por ROBOTS WILL KILL, así como una de las icónicas siluetas en tiza de ELLIS G.



Una vez dentro lo primero que vi fue a uno de los artistas de performance en pleno desarrollo de su acción; armado con un pollo de goma y desplazándose en un avión de juguete, el hombre no hacia mas que chillar y posar para las fotos…. ¿?.


El primer stand en el que me paré fue el de la gallería A DYING BREED, de Brooklyn. Fundada por Sen 2, Rubin y Zimer mostraba la obra de estos tres grandes del graffiti newyorkino.





Otro stand que me gustó bastante fue el del colectivo japonés YONABE. En él, se mostraba la obra de sus tres componentes: MASATO OKANO, IKKO OZAWA y TAKESHI SATO. Los tres tienen estilos muy diferentes y muy reconocibles, pero todos comparten un mismo gusto por el pop y la cultura popular americana:





Más adelante me encontré con la obra de HEC1, un mítico graffitero de Miami, cuya obra ha ido evolucionando hacia una fabulosa mezcla de expresionismo abstracto y color. Tuve además la suerte de poder conocerlo en persona y charlar un ratito con él; un tipo encantador que pone en su obra una pasión enorme. Curiosamente, la pared que mostraba las pequeñas piezas en blanco y negro fue mi favorita. Pasaos por SU BLOG para ver más obra de este fantástico artista:



En uno de los pasillos me encontre con este poster-stencil lleno de pegatinas; casi todas pertenecen a artistas que estaban en la Feria mostrando su obra: Fumero, Hec1, Army of One, 2Esae…



La Galería CONVERGE, de Pennsylvania, mostraba una interesante selección de obras de artistas locales. De entre todas ellas, la cabeza colgante de HOWARD TRAN era la que más impactaba; además, mirando dentro de sus orejas uno podía ver un video (al que no le preste demasiada atención, la verdad):



La obra de PASCAL LIEVRE también me hizo gracia; una pared llena paginas de un libro de Mapplethorpe en las que el artista, había cubierto con purpurina cualquier anatomía al descubierto, cambiando por completo el aspecto y el mensaje de la obra original:



Una de los stands que tenía más ganas de visitar era el de la Galería MIGHTY TANAKA, de Brooklyn; una de las abanderadas en la escena urbana de Nueva York. La lista de artistas con los que trabajan es impresionante: Hellbent, Veng, JMR, etc. Además, este año comisariaron junto al colectivo ROBOTS WILL KILL todo el tema de street art, incluyendo 20 paneles de tela repartidos por toda la feria con artistas como Dark Clouds, CERN, ChrisRWK, Veng, Danielle Mastrion, NEVER, ND’A, Joe Iurato, Chris Stain, See One, CAM, Apolo Torres, Cake, etc. La pena es que los paneles estaban tan alto, tan lejos y tan oscuros, que era imposible apreciar gran cosa. Eso si, un 10 por el esfuerzo:
